Autoclave-foamed expanded polypropylene (EPP)

The manufacturing of EPP beads may be divided into two basic manufacturing phases -extrusion of polypropylene PP and expansion of the extruded PP. In the extrusion phase, the initial material – extruded PP in the form of minipellets – is prepared from the polypropylene raw material. During this phase, additives, such as colorants or stabilisers, may be added to the plastic. Minipellets, together with further additives, then enter the autoclave where the preparation for the expansion, occurs under the influence of high pressure, temperature and a swelling agent carbon dioxide. The expansion as such then occurs as a result of the decrease of the pressure of the surroundings, after the minipellets impregnated with the blowing agent leave the autoclave. Each minipellet may increase its volume many times during the expansion. The expansion is thus completed outside the autoclave, in the expansion chamber which has to be of a suitable shape and size. The lowest density is achieved by repeated expansion when an already once expanded PP is subject to repeated expansion in the preexpander. The density of the resulting product ranges usually within the range from 200 g/l to 14,5 g/l.

The process of manufacturing EPP beads is highly complex. It requires a high level of technical expertise and usually also a special, “customized” devices and a specific configuration thereof, in order to synchronize the individual manufacturing operations and their parameters so as to provide intermediates and final products of the required quality.
